The Aztecs built altars known as Cuauhxicalli specifically for the purpose of human sacrifice. These altars were typically located at the top of pyramids or temples, and were used to perform the actual sacrifice. The altar would have a slab of stone on which the victim would be placed, and a small depression at the top of the slab where the victim's heart would be removed. The Aztecs believed that the heart was the most important part of the body and that by removing the heart, they were giving the gods the life force of the victim. The gods would then in turn provide them with sustenance, fertility and protection.
